[Curt Sachs]
The point of Sachs's analysis is that the major/minor system *didn't*
arise as an outgrowth of modality (maybe you meant to say that, it
wasn't clear to me). Instead, he sees it as the result of the
interaction of a very ancient kind of folk tonality found in melodies
of narrow range and an instrumental practice that historically arrived

The term "useless" is highly subjective in this context. Do you mean chords
which are decorative (linear) rather than functional, or chords which in
your terms "sound awful"?
For example, one chord you curiously omit would be C, E, Gb, Bb, Db or
C7(b5,b9). I use this chord quite frequently both in root position and in

In order to be qualified to say that the Church music was
not representative of the music of the time, he would have to have
more access to the secular music of the time. Maybe he had more
information than has been shown here, but until I see the music that

I'm looking for a list of chords that are theoretical but useless.
For instance, on paper, a maj11th is a valid chord, but it sounds
awful. The same might go for a suspended 6th chord.
I'm looking for this list because I teach music and am trying to weed
out such chords from a list that I have compiled.

I think that a chord is
subordinate technique although very important one.
Undoubtedly the Bass is basis as it is his overtones. But main

This was a comment on the E24 article you mentioned. Note that the
augmented 6th in quarter-comma meantone (or E31) is a very good
approximation of the interval 7/4, but the latter gets two commas off in
E53. So E53 + the diatonic scale degrees is probably not a good
candidate for CPP music.
Hans

Though Arab music uses E24 notation, that is not what the play. Instead,
try say E53 with minor second m = 4, major second M = 9, and a neutral
second n = 6 E53 tonesteps or commas.
